Hatton Jewellery Institute is delighted to be welcoming Louis Klein to out teaching team of specialists for 2025!
Bringing his EXCEPTIONAL skill and expertise, his engraving courses will be starting in February 2025 (dates below). The courses will be scheduled on weekends to allow those who are be unable to make weekday classes, and there will also be an opportunity for enrolled students to access his practice equipment after each class. As we say...practice makes perfect!
Louis’s classes will be small, (maximum 4 people), and will guide students through the core basics of hand engraving, (course info below).

Day 1
Introduction (all students) talk on tools and technique & history of engraving.
Demonstration of cutting before all students set up on equipment ready to cut.
Lunch
Brass practice plates and dividers used to mark lines before cutting straight lines and circles.
Day 2
Lecture on borders and patterns.
Use the dividers to mark even lines and layout space for the borders.
Demonstration of cutting different styles of borders.
Lunch
Practice cutting border patterns in different styles.
Day 3
Lecture on Scroll design and drawing before showing examples of the Masters/Greats.
Demonstration of drawing and cutting scroll layout/ the rules of scroll work.
Lunch
Brass plate set up for students’ main project.
Explain design transfer from paper with acetone.
Students draw scroll designs before cutting their plate.
Day 4
Lecture on Shading and creating darkness value and contrast in engraving before looking at examples of masters work and discuss.
Demonstration of shading in scroll work and background removal / stippling.
Lunch
Students working on main project cutting.
Day 5
Lecture on inlay show examples of Inlay and different colours created from different alloys and metals.
Demonstration of inlay
Lunch
Students finish cutting their projects and discuss at the end.
